Ebook About NEW YORK TIMES BEST SELLER • “Absolutely riveting historical fiction that reads like the most page-turning of thrillers.” —Lisa Scottoline, bestselling author of Eternal One of the Washington Post’s 20 Books to Read This Summer • A Real Simple Best New BookA young Puritan woman—faithful, resourceful, but afraid of the demons that dog her soul--plots her escape from a violent marriage in this riveting and propulsive novel of historical suspense from the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Flight Attendant.Boston, 1662. Mary Deerfield is twenty-four-years-old. Her skin is porcelain, her eyes delft blue, and in England she might have had many suitors. But here in the New World, amid this community of saints, Mary is the second wife of Thomas Deerfield, a man as cruel as he is powerful. When Thomas, prone to drunken rage, drives a three-tined fork into the back of Mary's hand, she resolves that she must divorce him to save her life. But in a world where every neighbor is watching for signs of the devil, a woman like Mary—a woman who harbors secret desires and finds it difficult to tolerate the brazen hypocrisy of so many men in the colony—soon becomes herself the object of suspicion and rumor. When tainted objects are discovered buried in Mary's garden, when a boy she has treated with herbs and simples dies, and when their servant girl runs screaming in fright from her home, Mary must fight to not only escape her marriage, but also the gallows. A twisting, tightly plotted novel of historical suspense from one of our greatest storytellers, Hour of the Witch is a timely and terrifying story of socially sanctioned brutality and the original American witch hunt.Book Hour of the Witch: A Novel Review :
“Ah, the Devil Herself. We really don’t know whether the Devil wears breeches or a skirt, now do we?”-Hour of the WitchI went into this book thinking it would be a cheap, thrilling, borderline horror novel about a woman accused to witchcraft back in the 1600s.What I got was an informative, insightful, and completely believable historical fiction novel! This book read more like a legal thriller than horror. And I was completely okay with it.Mary Deerfield is a 24 year old Puritan woman living in Boston during the mid-1600sHer husband, Thomas, beats and abuses her until one day he takes it too far, stabbing her hand with a fork!It was after this incident that Mary decides she must divorce him else she fear for her life.Divorce proceedings quickly turn into something more sinister.. Mary is soon accused of witchcraft! With what seems like the entire town against her, will Mary be able to clear her name? Or find herself hanging from the gallows? This book was not fast-paced. Yet somehow I was hooked so completely that I finished reading this 400 page book in 2 days. The writing and language made you feel like this was the real deal, as if Chris Bohjalian lived during that time and knew exactly how things were said. Really added to the believability. You understand completely how the witchcraft hysteria made its way through Massachusetts during the Salem Trials. You could tell me that this book is a legitimate story of an accused woman and I wouldn’t find it hard at all to believe you. THAT IS HOW WELL ITS WRITTEN!!5Stars!And the added honor of making its way into my “favorites” shelf!! I have never seen a book that was so poorly printed. This is what I have found up to page 127. I would love to know how many others have found the same type of shoddiness.
